истВ XIX в. христианские миссионеры проявляли активный интерес к освоению Тихоокеанского Северо-Запада [ Pacific Northwest]. Первая миссия была основана методистами в долине р. Уилламетт [ Willamette River] в 1834, через год еще одна была создана у поселения Уолла-Уолла [ Walla Walla]. Главы миссий занимались не только крещением индейцев, но и способствовали колонизации Орегонских земель [ Oregon country]. Один из основателей миссии в Уолла-Уолла М. Уитмен [ Whitman, Marcus] был вместе с женой жестоко убит индейцами (1847).
